A warm little guide to the celebrations

If Indian weddings are new to you, this page is here to make everything feel easy, joyful, and welcoming. Think of it as a friendly overview of the rituals, the flow of the week, what to wear, and a few helpful notes so you can settle in, celebrate, and enjoy every part of it.

The celebrations, one by one

Dates, what to expect, and the meaning behind each function.

Engagement & Sangeet

The official beginning and the biggest pre-wedding celebration

26 January 2027

What happens

The evening begins with the engagement ceremony, which marks the formal beginning of the couple's journey together. After that, the celebration opens into the sangeet: music, dancing, family performances, speeches, and a lot of energy in one room.

Why it matters

This event is about both commitment and joy. The engagement honors the coming together of two families, and the sangeet celebrates that union in the most lively, expressive way possible.

What to wear

Festive outfits that feel easy to move in are perfect here. If you are unsure, just aim for celebratory and comfortable.

Mehendi

Henna, color, and the easy joy of gathering together

29 January 2027

What happens

Henna designs are applied in a festive setting with music, conversation, snacks, and time to settle into the wedding week. It is usually one of the most relaxed and social events, with plenty of chances to mingle.

Why it matters

Mehendi is associated with happiness, beauty, and good fortune. It carries a celebratory feeling, but it also gently marks the transition into the wedding ceremonies ahead.

What to wear

Colorful, relaxed festive clothing works beautifully. Choose something comfortable enough to sit, mingle, and maybe get a little henna on.

Haldi

A bright, playful ceremony centered on blessing and care

30 January 2027

What happens

During haldi, a turmeric paste is applied by close family and friends in a ceremony that is often joyful, affectionate, and a little messy in the best way. There is usually lots of laughter, teasing, and warm family energy.

Why it matters

Turmeric is tied to purification, blessing, and prosperity. The ritual is meant to prepare the couple for marriage while surrounding them with love, good wishes, and community.

What to wear

Light, easy clothing in yellow or soft tones is ideal. It is best to wear something you would not mind getting a little messy.

Wedding Ceremony

The sacred heart of the celebrations

31 January 2027

What happens

The ceremony includes sacred rituals, prayers, vows, and symbolic moments that formally mark the marriage itself. It is often guided by family tradition and can include several meaningful steps that unfold over the course of the ceremony.

Why it matters

This is the most symbolic part of the week. It is about commitment, blessing, and the spiritual meaning of marriage, all held in the presence of family and community.

What to wear

This is the dressiest event of the week, so traditional or formal attire is a lovely choice. Elegant and comfortable is more than enough.

Wedding FAQ

A few quick answers for guests who are new to Indian weddings, travelling in, or wondering what to expect.

What should I wear?

Festive Indian or formal western attire is welcome. Bright colors, embroidery, and dressy outfits are completely at home at Indian weddings. Comfort matters too, especially for longer events.

Do I need a visa for India?

Many international guests need a visa or e-visa before travelling to India. Please check the official India visa portal early, and make sure your passport has enough validity for your trip.

How long are the ceremonies?

Some rituals are short and social; the wedding ceremony itself can be longer. You can expect a mix of seated moments, family rituals, food, music, and plenty of mingling.

Do I need to understand every ritual?

Not at all. Come with curiosity and enjoy the flow. Family and friends will happily explain what is happening, and the most important thing is simply being present.

Should I carry cash or use cards?

Cards and digital payments are common in Delhi, but it is helpful to keep a small amount of cash for quick tips, small shops, or short local errands.

How should I get between events?

App-based cabs like Uber and Ola are usually the simplest choice. If you are staying in Aerocity, it is also easy to coordinate rides with other guests.

Can you make it?

We’d love to know if you’ll be there. It means a lot to celebrate this with you.
